ONE Championship Holds Press Luncheon at Vikings MOA

The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), held a luncheon for select members of the media at Vikings Mall of Asia late Tuesday, 29 November. Athletes in attendance included ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera, ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, and world title challenger Reece “Lightning” McLaren, as well as Filipino fighters Danny Kingad and Eugene Toquero.

Fighters are set to compete at ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION which takes place Friday evening, 2 December at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. Headlining the massive fight card is Brandon Vera who will defend his ONE Heavyweight World Championship belt against Japanese MMA standout Hideki Sekine.

Brandon Vera, ONE Heavyweight World Champion, stated: “I’m ready to fight and defend my title. Training has gone great. I’m excited to step back inside the ONE Championship cage. I love the Philippines, this is my home. I’m here to help all of our Filipino fighters. I’m going to make sure I won’t be the last Filipino heavyweight world champion.”

Bibiano Fernandes, ONE Bantamweight World Champion, stated: “I’ve competed all across the globe against the world’s best fighters, but even though I am a world champion, I feel I am still constantly improving. Martial arts is a continued pursuance of self-improvement and greatness.

As long as I continue to improve and take on the biggest challenges, I am happy. Reece McLaren is the latest challenge and I am ready to face him.” Reece McLaren, world title challenger, stated: “I’ve been an underdog my entire life. I excel in this position, it invigorates me. Bibiano Fernandes is a big hill to climb, but my skills and achievements have brought me to this stage in my career and I am going to do everything I can to take home the belt. This is a rare opportunity so I have to do my best.”

Rally Australia (WRC): Mikkelsen scores Volkswagen's Last Win

ANDREAS MIKKELSEN AND ANDERS JAEGER WON THE FINAL ROUND OF THE 2016 FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP TO END VOLKSWAGEN MOTORSPORT’S SPELL IN THE SERIES ON A HIGH NOTE.

Reece McLaren inspired by Eduard Folayang’s title victory, looks to upset Fernandes

Filipino-Australian bantamweight sensation Reece McLaren burst onto the scene in ONE Championship after joining the promotion in 2015. He has since come away with two highly-impressive victories over top caliber opponents inside the ONE Championship cage which has earned him a shot at ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes.

McLaren (9-3) is set to challenge reigning champion Fernandes (19-3) in the co-main event of ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION which takes place Friday, 2 December at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. The 25-year-old McLaren says he draws inspiration from another Filipino warrior who recently became an MMA world champion.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Baguio City’s Eduard “Landslide” Folayang shocked the world with a scintillating technical knockout victory over Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki to capture the ONE Lightweight World Championship. McLaren says the win has motivated him in training for his upcoming title shot against Fernandes.

“I saw the Eduard [Folayang] fight and I drew a lot of inspiration from it. Another fellow Filipino winning a world title shows that it can be done,” said McLaren.

“Watching the fight was super exciting. I was on the edge of my seat. It was such a massive opportunity for him and to see him walk away with the victory was just so inspirational.”

As talented as McLaren is however, the Brazilian Fernandes is riding an 11-fight win streak and is making the fifth defense of his ONE Championship title so he won’t be taken lightly. And just like Folayang did against Aoki, McLaren will also be entering this fight against Fernandes as the prohibitive underdog.

Good thing for McLaren, the role he plays in all of this doesn’t seem to bother him one bit.

“Being labeled the favorite or the underdog doesn’t really matter to me. I’m going to put a hundred percent into the work and hope it shows,” said McLaren.

McLaren began his ONE Championship career with an upset victory over Filipino warrior and fan-favorite, Mark Striegl. He then followed that win up with another upset victory over top Tajikistan prospect Muin Gafurov.

That’s why going up against Fernandes, McLaren feels right in his element.

“I find no difference between being the favorite or the underdog. Everyone loves the underdog story and they love it when he wins, so give me that label and I’ll run with it,” said McLaren.

“An upset to me is the man who is not meant to win, wins.”

While Fernandes is gunning for his fifth straight successful title defense, McLaren aims at a different kind of streak. He goes for his third straight upset. If McLaren can do that, then the world is in the palm of his hands.

“I’m confident I can get this win because I have Australia and the Philippines supporting me,” said McLaren. “Bibiano, it is such an honor to be facing you. I respect you a lot, but this is going to be a changing of the guard.”

Brandon Vera returns to ONE Cage to defend heavyweight title

ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera (14-7-0, 1NC) of San Diego, California is set to make his much-anticipated return to the ONE Championship cage next Friday, 2 December at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. The Filipino-American fighter is set to defend his title belt against undefeated Japanese challenger Hideki Sekine (7-0) in the main event of ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION.

The matchup headlines a stacked fight card featuring a posse of local homegrown Filipino mixed martial artists. Seeing action are Team Lakay standouts Geje Eustaquio, Honorio Banario, April Osenio and Danny Kingad. Also to see cage time are Eugene Toquero, Mark Striegl, and Filipino-Australian Reece McLaren.

Vera, 39, takes pride in leading the charge for team Philippines who are ready to put on a show in Manila.

The Philippines is just as much my home as the United States is, and I am truly blessed to be able to compete here in front of all the Filipino fans,” said Vera. “It’s an amazing country and we discover something new everyday. It’s an honor to be able to headline massive ONE Championship fight cards.”

Vera was last seen in the cage nearly a year ago, when he captured the ONE Heavyweight World Championship with a first round knockout victory over Taiwanese-Canadian fighter Paul “Typhoon” Cheng.

His opponent, the 265-pound Sekine is a new ONE Championship talent acquisition. He is currently unbeaten as a professional mixed martial artist. Six of his seven victories have come by finish, including three by submission and three by knockout.

With both fighters having a knack for exciting finishes, the bout is expected to not go the distance. Vera, who joined ONE Championship in 2014, is a winner of two straight with both wins coming by first round knockout.

Vera, who has been a mixed martial artist for the greater part of the last two decades, feels he is at the highest point of his career now.

“My mixed martial arts career has had its up and downs, highs and lows. But I feel that right now, I’m the best that I have ever been. I’m in my prime and I feel great,” said Vera. “The honor and prestige of being a world champion is something that I take very seriously. I am proud to wear the ONE Heavyweight World Championship belt around my waist.”

Vera promises fans who will come down to the MOA Arena next week that he will be at peak condition. Expect only the best performance said the Filipino-American.

“Training has been phenomenal. I train with the best fighters in the world at Alliance MMA and with some really top guys in the Philippines as well. I am always in shape and ready to go,” said Vera.

“I can’t wait to be inside that ONE Championship cage again. The big fight atmosphere in Manila is amazing. Filipino fight fans are a passionate bunch.”

StoryLines: 2016-17 NBA Regular Season

·         WORTH THE WAIT: Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker and Joel Embiid all made strong cases to be the top pick of the 2014 NBA Draft. In the end, Wiggins got the nod and went on to capture Rookie of the Year honors with the Timberwolves. Parker, the second pick by Milwaukee, missed the bulk of his rookie season after tearing his ACL. Embiid, chosen third by Philadelphia, missed two full seasons with foot problems. But all three are finally playing in the NBA at the same time and validating their place at the top of the draft. Wiggins is averaging more than 25 points and leading the NBA in three-point accuracy. Parker is scoring 20 per game and, like Wiggins, diversifying his game. And Embiid has hit the ground running as a game-changing big man with an array of skills.

·         TINY’S LEGACY: Nate “Tiny” Archibald’s name has popped up repeatedly early this season because James Harden and Russell Westbrook look poised to chase his record as the only player in NBA history to lead the league in scoring and assists in a single season. That singular accomplishment is only part of Archibald’s legacy. The Bronx, N.Y., native defied the odds by even reaching the NBA, and being a second-round pick didn’t augur future stardom. But Archibald used his speed, smarts and creativity to develop into an All-Star, NBA champion, Hall of Famer and Top 50 player. These days, Archibald is very active in the community mentoring youth and participating in NBA Cares events.

·         PLAYING BIG: Size and versatility will forever move the NBA scouting needle. Look no further than Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo. Size is not a prerequisite for success, however, especially in today’s game, which features a more wide-open and up-tempo style of play. Boston’s Isaiah Thomas, Charlotte’s Kemba Walker, Atlanta’s Dennis Schröder, Memphis’ Mike Conley and the Clippers’ Chris Paul continue to prove that impact players still come in small packages. All five 6-1-and-under point guards are off to great starts. Thomas, Walker and Conley are putting up career numbers. Schröder has risen to the challenge of being a full-time starter. And Paul, in his 12th season, is showing no signs of slowing down. Also in the mix as 6-foot or 6-1 forces: Toronto’s Kyle Lowry, Phoenix’s Eric Bledsoe and Dallas’ J.J. Barea.

·         CARRYING THE TORCH: For years, Kobe Bryant (along with Dwyane Wade) anchored the NBA’s shooting guard spot. With Kobe’s departure, a host of his former counterparts – many of whom consider him a big influence on their careers – are showing that the position is well stocked for the present and future. Houston’s James Harden (now running point) and Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan are off to historic starts. Golden State’s Klay Thompson and Chicago’s Jimmy Butler are two-way stars. Portland’s CJ McCollum, Phoenix’s Devin Booker and Utah’s Rodney Hood are budding young players. Boston’s Avery Bradley keeps getting better. The depth and variety at shooting guard is impressive.

·         GLUE GUY: One big reason for the Hawks’ outstanding start is the play of Thabo Sefolosha, who has overcome adversity and is playing some of the best basketball of his pioneering career. The NBA’s first player from Switzerland, the 31-year-old Sefolosha is scoring at the highest rate of his 11-year career and ranks among the league leaders in steals, field goal percentage and plus-minus. He is enjoying success off the court, too, as the fashion maven recently opened a men’s boutique in Atlanta.

·         PERSEVERING PELICAN: The NBA’s assist leaderboard features the usual suspects such as James Harden, Chris Paul, John Wall, Russell Westbrook, LeBron James and Draymond Green. Also on the list is Tim Frazier, the Pelicans’ third-year point guard, who excelled during Jrue Holiday’s absence. Frazier came in through the back door. First, he tore his Achilles at the start of his senior season at Penn State. After a solid redshirt senior campaign, he went undrafted in 2014 before earning NBA D-League Rookie of the Year and MVP honors in the same season. His big break came when he averaged 13.1 points and 7.5 assists in 16 games for New Orleans last season after signing in March. Even with Holiday’s return this week, Frazier has shown that he deserves to continue playing a big role for the Pelicans.

·         SWEET PRINCE: The Clippers’ starting lineup features three stars (Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan) and one of the game’s great shooters (J.J. Redick). The fifth member of the unit, however, is also leaving his mark during the best start in team history. Luc Mbah a Moute has helped lead the NBA’s top defense while making unsung contributions on offense. Coach Doc Rivers recently called him the league’s best defender. Mbah a Moute has long been regarded as a terrific teammate and a mentor to young NBA players, including fellow Cameroon native Joel Embiid, who participated in one of Mbah a Moute’s hoops camps back home. Mbah a Moute, the prince in his Cameroonian village, was a camper at the inaugural Basketball without Borders Africa camp in 2003. He has been instrumental in growing the game in Africa.

Upcoming Games
·         Nov. 22: Thunder @ Lakers, 10:30 p.m. ET, NBA TV: Solid test for a young Lakers team.
·         Nov. 23: Timberwolves @ Pelicans, 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN: Karl-Anthony Towns vs. Anthony Davis.

The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), announced today that the mixed martial artists competing at ONE: DEFENDING HONOR are expected to be ready for all the action which takes place Friday evening, 11 November, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

In the main event, MMA legend and ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki will defend his title against Filipino MMA icon Eduard “Landslide” Folayang. They are joined on the card by an epic rematch between ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov and former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag “Tungaa” Jadambaa in the co-main event.

Four of Singapore’s homegrown fighting talents will also be taking to the cage alongside some of the biggest names in Asian MMA today.

CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui, stated: “Five years after ONE changed the face of Asian sports with our first event at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, we are back again with yet another blockbuster event in ONE: DEFENDING HONOR. With two world title belts on the line starring some of the biggest names in MMA such as ONE World Champions Shinya Aoki and Marat Gafurov, I am certain MMA fans around the world will get to savour ONE’s signature brand of non-stop martial arts action.”

Headliner and ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya Aoki stated: “I am prepared for Eduard Folayang’s striking, and there is no way he is going to beat me on the ground. Eduard is a fantastic martial artist and a true hero to the Filipino people, and I respect him for that. However, I am entering the bout as the reigning and defending champion, and I plan on leaving that way.”

Eduard Folayang stated: “There is no doubt Shinya Aoki is a legend in Asian MMA, but I firmly believe I can be the one to beat the legend. I have prepared my whole life for this moment since the first ONE Championship event in 2011, and I am going to seize this opportunity to become champion. This is my fight and my time to reign with the support of the Philippines behind me.”

ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat Gafurov stated: “I am at the peak of my abilities as a martial artist and am only getting better every day. Jadambaa may have improved as well, but the story this time will be the same as our last fight in November 2015. There is absolutely no chance of me losing this belt.”

Former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag Jadambaa stated: “Not many people get a chance to reclaim what was once theirs. I will get my belt back from Gafurov and become the ONE Featherweight World Champion once again. I know exactly what I need to do to make that happen, and I am fully prepared to do so this Friday night.”

Storylines: 2016-17 NBA Regular Season

·         POINTS AND DIMES: Only once has a player led the NBA in scoring and assists in the same season: Nate “Tiny” Archibald in 1972-73. It’s incredibly early, of course, but it’s realistic to think that former teammates James Harden of Houston and Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City could accomplish the feat. Both are known first as scorers, but Harden and Westbrook deserve credit for their continued improvement as playmakers. Harden has shifted to point guard for the Rockets as he looks to raise his assist average for the seventh straight season. Westbrook is a triple-double threat every time he takes the court.

·         AGAINST THE GRAIN: At a time when NBA teams are launching three-pointers at a record rate, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan is doing things his way. DeRozan opened the season with four 30-point games that included a total of one three-pointer. That’s in keeping with his career pattern, which is unusual for a two-guard. DeRozan has emerged as one of the game’s top scorers by attacking the rim relentlessly and thriving in the mid-range. The savvy DeRozan knows how to get to his spots and draw fouls. He’s also the face of the Raptors, who drafted him in 2009, re-signed him last summer and have seen him become an active presence in the community.

·         DENNIS DAZZLES: This is shaping up to be a breakout season for Atlanta’s Dennis Schröder. The first German guard to make a big impact in the NBA, the four-year veteran is starting for the first time in his career after the Hawks traded Jeff Teague. Schröder is a late bloomer who didn’t fully commit to basketball until he was 16, when his father died and he viewed the game as a way to provide for his family. (Skateboarding was his first love.) One of the NBA’s quickest players, Schröder has watched a lot of film on Tony Parker for pointers on how to use his speed and finish around the basket against bigger players.

·         WELCOME BACK: Sergio Rodriguez’s first NBA stint didn’t quite go as planned, with the 2006 first-round pick heading home to Spain after four seasons with the Trail Blazers, Kings and Knicks. Rodriguez spent the next six years honing his craft with Real Madrid and the Spanish National Team. He signed with the 76ers over the summer and is off to a solid start as an immediate starter and veteran presence for the NBA’s youngest team, averaging 12 points and nearly 8 assists. Given his age (30) and comfort level overseas, it’s unusual that Rodriguez decided to give the NBA another shot.

·         STUDENT OF THE GAME: Quin Snyder’s basketball résumé speaks for itself. He played at Duke before joining Coach K’s staff. He served as an assistant in the NBA and with CSKA Moscow (under current Spurs assistant Ettore Messina) and a head coach in college and the NBA D-League before becoming coach of the Jazz, a potential breakout team in 2016-17. Snyder has another version of his résumé, one that shows him graduating with degrees in philosophy and political science. He also earned a law degree and an MBA from Duke. With many career options, both after college and during a mid-2000s coaching break, Snyder kept picking hoops. It’s interesting to consider what lessons from academia shaped him and his coaching.

·         PASCAL’S PRINCIPLE: Pascal Siakam’s journey from Cameroon to a spot in Toronto’s starting lineup as a rookie has taken a few twists and turns. None bigger than the first turn, when at the behest of his family, which included three older brothers with NBA aspirations, he reluctantly agreed to give basketball a try. A positive experience at a Basketball without Borders Camp in South Africa in 2012 led to his relocating to the U.S. and becoming a standout at New Mexico State. After thriving at the NBA Combine, Siakam was selected by Toronto with the 27th pick in 2016, fulfilling the dream his late father had of having one of his sons reach the NBA.
